The release of Windows 11 and its first annual update seemed to have no effect.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The sale of PCs in the third quarter of the year fell nearly 20% compared to a year ago, the largest drop in decades and the fourth straight quarter of year-over-year declines, according to preliminary research by two analyst firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The surge in PC sales created by the pandemic and the tremendous uptick in hybrid and remote work is over and no longer adding to computer sales. Back-to-school PC purchases also showed \u201cdisappointing results, despite massive promotions and price drops, due to a lack of need as many consumers had purchased new PCs in the last two years,\u201d according to Mikako Kitagawa, a director analyst at Gartner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the business side, geopolitical upheavals, such as the war in Ukraine, and economic uncertainties \u201cled to more selective IT spending, and PCs were not at the top of the priority list,\u201d Kitagawa added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, PC sales fell a whopping 19.5% in the third quarter of 2022 \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2022-10-10-gartner-says-worldwide-pc-shipments-declined-19-percent-in-third-quarter-of-2022\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the largest decline<\/a> since Gartner began tracking sales in the mid-1990s. Research firm IDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS49755822\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pegged&nbsp;the year-over-year drop at 15%<\/a>, and echoed Gartner&#8217;s take on the issues effecting sales, according the firm\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=IDC_P36344\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Worldwide Tracker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring the peak of the pandemic, many consumers, schools, and business sought new PCs and that surge has been largely fulfilled,\u201d said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC&#8217;s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US PC market dropped 17.3% in the third quarter of 2022, the fifth consecutive quarter of year-over-year shipment decline. Slow laptop sales drove the overall US market down, while desktop sales showed modest growth \u2014 driven by pent-up demand among businesses as well as the public sector, according to Gartner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInflation is the biggest concern in the US. market, but smaller businesses are showing relative optimism about macroeconomic conditions,\u201d Kitagawa said. \u201cWhile laptop demand among large enterprises sharply decreased in the third quarter of 2022, small and midsize businesses did not show as steep of a drop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2022\/10\/screen-shot-2022-10-11-at-4.08.07-pm-100933310-orig.jpg?auto=webp&amp;quality=85,70\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2022\/10\/screen-shot-2022-10-11-at-4.08.07-pm-100933310-large.jpg?auto=webp&amp;quality=85,70\" alt=\"screen shot 2022 10 11 at 4.08.07 pm\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Preliminary Worldwide PC Vendor Unit Shipment Estimates for 3Q22 (Thousands of Units)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regions were hit particularly hard by plummeting sales, decreasing 26.4% year-over-year in the third quarter to 17 million units \u2013 the steepest decline among all regions, according to Gartner. It was the third negative quarter for the EMEA PC market following a boom at the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, shipments of PCs totaled 74.3 million, according to IDC.
